Scientists have returned from an unprecedented expedition to catalogue the tiny drifters of the deep – miniature flying snails, swimming worms and shrimp-like creatures that paddle themselves with oar-like feet.

These little life forms – known as zooplankton – are essential to life as we know it on Earth. Marine biologists usually study these creatures in relatively shallow water. But they wanted to know more about the populations in deeper water, between one and five kilometers down.

Scientists on research cruise in the Bermuda Triangle used specially designed nets to capture fragile sea creatures in deep water. It is part of an effort to produce a global inventory of zooplankton by 2010.

The 28 experts from 14 countries who were on board identified an incredible variety of zooplankton – at least 500 species — but relatively few in number compared to the uppermost ocean layer. While still at sea, they sequenced the DNA of 220 of them. Some were less than a millimeter long. Others, including some of the jellyfish, were three to four centimeters in length.

The Pentagon shooting suspect, John Patrick Bedell, who on Thursday evening opened fire on two security guards at an entrance to the Pentagon died at hospital. He was injured by the return fire of other guards, standing there. The injured guards are stable and out of danger. He did not give them any clue of attack. He just approached the security guards near gate and started firing. The suspect was identified as an American citizen named John Patrick Bedell and he was 36-year-old. The death news has been confirmed by the U.S. Defence Department Headquarters, too.John Patrick was not a terrorist he was a common man who had nothing to do with violence and terrorism but just he was not convinced with the commission reports about September 11 terrorist attacks on New York.In an internet posting, he mentioned that Marine Colonel James Sabow death case made him to establish the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions. Marine Colonel James Sabow was found dead in the backyard of his home in California in 1991 and investigators had referred his death as suicide but thats not true. A gunman coolly drew a weapon from his pocket and opened fire at the teeming subway entrance to the Pentagon complex Thursday evening, wounding two police officers before being shot and critically wounded, officials said.The two officers suffered grazing wounds that were not life-threatening and were being treated in hospital, said Richard Keevill, chief of Pentagon police.The suspect, believed to be a U.S. citizen, walked up to a security checkpoint at the Pentagon in an apparent attempt to get inside the massively fortified Defense Department headquarters, at about 6:40 p.m. “He just reached in his pocket, pulled out a gun and started shooting,” Keevill said. “He walked up very cool. He had no real emotion on his face.” The Pentagon officers returned fire with semiautomatic weapons.
