In fact appliance retailers across the borough said they saw business buoyed by as much as 40 percent this long weekend as Staten Islanders in the market for new appliances — and even those who didn’t need something, but wanted to replace aging workhorses at home — looked to take advantage of a uniquely American consumer maxim: Buy more to save more. As of this afternoon, the state had doled out $4 million of the $16.8 million in federal stimulus funds allocated as part of “New York’s Great Appliance Swap Out.” Rep. Michael McMahon (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) voted in favor of the stimulus program, which started Friday and runs through Sunday; it offers rebates of $50 to $105 per appliance, and $555 for the purchase of a three-appliance package of high-efficiency refrigerators, clothes washers and dishwashers. “I figure since they’re having the sale and the rebate I might as well take advantage of it now,” said Renee Dixon of Annadale, who had marked up her “Sale of the Century” flier in the margins with notes from the online research she did on each brand.
